Vacation Pet Tips

Summer is here, which means it’s time for a vacation! But before you hit the road or skies, you need to make sure your pet will be taken care of while you’re away. Here are some great tips:

  • If you take your pet:
    • Choose a pet-friendly airline.
    • Schedule vet visits to get shots and vaccines before a trip.
    • Make sure ID tags are up-to-date and secured to your pet’s collar and consider a microchip.
    • Plan accommodations ahead of time and create a packing list.
    • Schedule time for exercise and meals.
  • Boarding your pet:
    • Ask a friend, neighbor, vet, local animal shelter, or certified dog trainer for recommendations – we suggest Central Park and The Dog House!
    • Take a tour of the kennel! Meet the staff, explore outdoor play areas, note the size of the kennels and if the current guests are happy and friendly. If you ask for a tour of any kennel, and the owner declines, don’t leave your dog with them!
    • Make sure the kennel requires vaccinations. A well-run kennel should require all dogs to have their updated vaccinations and shots before a stay.
    • Ask specifically how much playtime, socializing and outdoor fun your pooch will receive each day and ask to see fenced play yards to make sure they are safe and secure.
    • Book early and consider a daycare visit as a test.
  • Hiring a pet-sitter:
    • Make reservations with your pet sitter early.
    • Ensure your pet is well socialized and allows strangers to handle them.
    • Affix current identification tags to your pet’s collar and maintain current vaccinations for your pet.
    • Leave clear instructions detailing specific pet-care responsibilities and emergency contact information.
    • Leave pet food and supplies in one place and buy extra pet supplies in case you’re away longer than planned.
    • Leave a key with a trustworthy neighbor as a backup, and give them and your pet sitter each other’s phone numbers.
    • Show the pet sitter your home’s important safety features such as the circuit breaker and security system.
