“My Furry Valentine” Update

February 12th, 2012

Well, by now you’ve probably heard the news that the “My Furry Valentine” adoption special, going on this weekend at our Adoption Center, has been a HUGE success!

We are so grateful to all the wonderful adopters who came out and stood in line Saturday morning in the FREEZING cold, some as early as 6:30 (!!) to get the pet they most wanted. With a community that truly supports adoption the way OKC does, we will reach our goal of ending the needless euthanasia of adoptable animals in our city!

So here’s an update on what’s happened so far this weekend at “My Furry Valentine.”

113 animals found homes on Saturday (WOW!), including most of our dogs and many of our cats, including several long-term residents at the adoption center.

Sunday (today) we will have 33 cats still available at the adoption center. These cats range in age from 6 months to 5 years, and we have all sizes, temperaments and colors! Whatever kind of cat you are interested, we’ve got it, so come on down and say hello!

We will also have about 6 more dogs that were not able to come on Saturday, but will be available today. We are open from 12 noon until 5pm today.

Many people have suggested that we pull more dogs from the OKC Shelter in order to have more dogs available for adoption, since most of our dogs and all of our puppies were adopted on Saturday.

We DO pull all of our adoption animals from the OKC shelter, so every animal we have available for adoption DOES actually come from the shelter. But we have to leave some animals at the shelter for its adoption program, and all OK Humane animals go through a vetting process–spay/neuter, vaccination, 2 week quarantine, behavior assessment, microchipping, etc. and those procedures take time.

How can we make sure that we have MORE animals (especially dogs and puppies) available for future events? That’s where all of you can help. We need foster homes! OK Humane does not have a shelter facility, so all our dogs are in foster homes while they are getting ready for adoption. The more foster homes we have, the more animals we can make available for adoption, and the more lives we can save! It’s just that simple.

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a foster parent, visit our foster program page. The first step is filling out an application so we know what kind of animals you’d like to foster, how often, etc.

We’ll be posting updates on social media throughout the day (including lots of pictures!) so check in on Facebook for the latest updates.
