SB 1712 "Black Market Breeder Bill" PASSES 38-8!

March 1st, 2010

We just received word from the Capitol that SB 1712 has passed the full Senate, 38-8!

We will have more details soon, such as a vote record and what is the next step for the bill.

For now, please take a moment to be happy and celebrate! The work is not over…once we have a list of who voted yes and who voted no, you can THANK your Senators for supporting this bill.

This is a tremendous victory for Oklahoma animals and all citizens of our state should be proud. We are NOT going to stand for being the “safe zone” for puppy millers forced out of other states with tougher laws, and we are not going to allow some people to get away with not paying their fair share of taxes. This bill goes a long way towards correcting both of these grievances.

Stay tuned for more information. For now, give yourselves a HIGH FIVE! This is our first of many victories on the road to making this bill into law.

THANK YOU for calling, writing, emailing and spreading the word.  You have done a good thing today.

This is animal rights advocacy at the neighborhood/community level making a difference statewide, a handful of people seeing a need and working together to fill it, and succeeding. It’s so easy to look at a situation like this and think, “This has always been and always will be, and there’s nothing I can do.” We’ve just seen there is something we can do. Now, the danger is in getting complacent. The battle is half won. After we’ve thanked our senators, we still must monitor this bill as it goes through the house, and again let our representatives know what we want. In addition, another bill, HB 2745, calling for voluntary regulation of puppy mills, has passed the house and is now before the senate for consideration. It is a good idea for us to be familiar with these bills and continue to monitor them because each of these bills will go through committee and go to the vote yet again.
