Meet the Freedom Friends!

OK Humane is proud to introduce a very special group of dogs in need of loving homes!

Their Story

Several months ago the Central Oklahoma Humane Society was contacted about many dogs and puppies who were not receiving adequate care. (Click here to see News 9′s coverage of the rescue.) We rallied our team and headed out to help as quickly as possible, ready to help in any way necessary.  Nothing could have prepared us for what we found when we arrived on location.  We found dogs who were living on a piece of property in an extremely remote area without a caregiver of any kind.  They were isolated and did not have access to any food or water.  There was only one means of shelter: a small shed that had been locked shut with 17 puppies and 2 adult trapped inside!  There was no ventilation, no food, and no water. The stench was unbearable.  It is unknown how long the dogs lived in these conditions. Even still, there were other neglected dogs on the property as well. Some were running loose without access to shelter, while others were trapped in a small wire pen with only one dog house to share between all of them.  Again, these dogs had no access to any food or water.

We pulled up our sleeves and began the dirty, difficult work of taking the dogs out of their awful situation and back to safety. Once they were back at our facilities, we began monitoring the their health, both physically and emotionally.  As we were taking great care to make sure that we addressed their emotional needs, we began noticing a strange set of physical symptoms.  After a bit of testing it was discovered that the dogs had been exposed to a disease called Distemper, likely from the wildlife they encountered while they were living at the isolated property.  We tended to their individual needs and placed them in a special quarantine time to ensure that they did not run the risk of spreading the illness to any other dogs. We are so excited to announce that these very special dogs and puppies are now available for adoption!  They are looking for extra special families who will be understanding of all of the rough times that they’ve been through, and who are willing to work through any medical and emotional issues that they may have due to their rough start to life.  Please read below to find out even more about these extraordinary pooches!
