Rita’s Angel Fund Helps Jackson the Doberman
In mid-March, a two year old male Doberman was brought to the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division as a confiscate/cruelty case. The animal was reported by a meter reader, who had been going into the backyard of the home and had seen the dog’s horrible condition. He has clearly been severely neglected and malnourished for quite some time. Additionally, this sweet and loving boy is heartworm positive and will need to undergo treatment for that as well. This majestic dog spent his first weekend at a veterinary hospital on IV fluids to help him get back into shape, and then a foster home was kind enough to take him in and help nurse him back to health.
The foster parents have named him Jackson, and he has already shown a lot of improvement. Jackson is slowly gaining weight, and will be completing his heartworm treatment soon. We know that he will be very excited to finally get a wonderful forever home.
Treatment and rehabilitation for Jackson will not be cheap. As OK Humane is a non-profit organization, the money is currently not in our budget to cover the cost. You can help Jackson and other animals like him by making a donation to OK Humane for “Rita’s Angel Fund.” This fund enables pets like Jackson to receive the life saving treatment they need to live. Through Rita’s Angel Fund, we are able to take in tough cases like Jackson that otherwise may be turned away. This fund is designated solely to the cost of treatment of hard-luck cases.
Here are some updates from the foster home on how Jackson has been doing:
“We’ve had Jackson for a week and thought you would like to see some updated pictures of him. He is doing pretty well. Here are some things that we are working on with him: crate training, housebreaking and simple commands (sit, stay, leave it). We are also working on some outdoor manners such as not barking and jumping on the fence when people walk down the street. There is a grade school a block away from my house so we get a lot of foot traffic.”
“Here is the week 2 update on Jackson. I’m not sure how much weight he has gained this week. He is still a little on the skinny side. His coat is starting to get softer and shinier and he is re-growing some hair on his bald spots. We saw Angel at K9 University last night and it went well. He determined that Jackson has fear aggression and anxiety. He is confident that we can correct his behavior. After some discussion, we decided it would be better to wait until after his heartworm treatment to work on his behavior since there is the possibility that he may not survive. (I’m optimistic but know it could happen.)”
Thank you for your support in helping us to get this amazing dog back to health!
HOWIE UPDATE!
As we reported yesterday, Howie’s surgery went very well. Here are a few pictures of him in recovery! Of course a big thanks to Dr. Beth Ruby at Quail Creek Veterinary Hospital for helping Howie through this and doing such a great job on the surgery.
Many people have been asking when Howie will be available for adoption. He needs some recovery time and will be available probably in about one month.
See pictures of Howie post-op here!
HELP SAVE HOWIE!!
OK HUMANE NEEDS YOU.
(November 18, 2009) Last week, OK Humane was fortunate to come across a very special dog named Howie. Howie is a 3 year old Bichon/Poodle mix. We quickly noticed his sweet demeanor, loving eyes, and darling personality. He seemed like a wonderful addition to our adoption program and we knew instantly he would make someone a wonderful life-long friend.
He had horribly matted hair making it difficult to know what was underneath, but we knew that there was a great little dog beneath the harsh coat. After rescuing Howie and finding him a foster home, we noticed that Howie was having a lot of difficulty using his left hind leg.
We arranged to have Howie evaluated by one of our staff veterinarians, who found that Howie had sustained a very bad fracture to his pelvis. Judging by the type and severity of the fracture it appears Howie was hit by a car and left to fend for himself with painful, debilitating injuries.
There is hope for Howie as his fractures can be fixed surgically to allow him to live a long and pain-free life. Without surgery Howie will be permanently debilitated and likely unadoptable to a deserving family.
T
he cost of repair for Howie’s fracture(s) is $1800. As OK Humane is a non-profit organization, this is a large sum of money that is currently not in our budget. HOW CAN YOU HELP?? You can help Howie by making a donation to OK Humane for “Rita’s Angel Fund.” This fund enables pets like Howie to receive the life saving treatment they need to live.
We are appealing to our great community to help us raise the money to get Howie the surgery he needs to have a second chance at life. Can you please help us fix this sweet angel?
If making a monetary donation is not something you can do at this time, please pass the word along to anyone you think would be able to help us help Howie.
PLEASE HELP US HELP HOWIE.
