OK Humane Responds to Moore Tornado Damage

May 21st, 2013

1 small

OK Humane is currently working with the City of Oklahoma City to assist the City of Moore to receive, assess and shelter animals affected by the tornado that ripped through Moore on May 20th, 2013.  Our staff and volunteers are working around the clock to ensure that these animals receive necessary care as they find their way home.

We will continue to update everyone on volunteer and in-kind needs as we move forward in the coming days and we have a better idea of needed medical, food and other supplies.

We want to thank everyone for their continued support of not only our organization, but our community as well. Our thoughts are with those who have lost so much today.

  17. Marissa DeMercurio says:

I just emailed the main address from this website but will submit a message here, too.

    Hello!
My name is Marissa and I live in Arvada, Co. I am currently connecting with several Colorado residents in the interest of helping displaced animals from the recent tornado.
I wanted to reach out to you and see if you have a need for long-term foster homes while many of the displaced residents rebuild and get back on their feet. Our goal would be to host dogs or cats for families who don’t want to relinquish their pet but need a safe place for it while they sort out their futures, then return the pets to their families when they get re-settled.

Do you think this would be feasible and/or helpful? Please let me know!

    Thank you,

    Marissa DeMercurio

    • okhumane says:

      Marissa,

Thank you so much for being willing to open your heart and home to animals displaced by the storm! At this time, our local foster network is sufficient to provide temporary homes for pets who were affected until they can be reunited with their owners. If a need arises for further support, we will reach out at that time.

We live in the Tulsa area, but are interested in the foster program. Are you fostering any of the displaced pets from the tornadoes? Hi there I work at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming and we are working on putting together a care package to send to you. We saw that you are looking for towels so we had 200 towels donated by our linen company. We are also working on gathering medical supplies that have expired for human use, but are still good for Veterinary use. From personal members of the hospital we are working on gathering leashes/toys/treats etc. I am also trying to partner with the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab to get more donations. We are wondering if there is anything else that you are in need of and if there is a different address we should ship to. I see the address for the Central Park Dog Daycare, but I just wanted to make sure that, that was the correct address. Thank you!

  41. HunterDillonCole says:

We are cat lovers and was wondering if people needed temp homes for their cats/small dogs until they re-build. We have three great homes/families in Florida and California. My mom used to volunteer at the Flagler Cty Humane Soc. and is now home bound with brain cancer and think doing something like this would help HER as well as others in your area of the tragedy. She lost one of her cats of 18 yrs last year a month to the day before her brain bleed and hasnt been the same since. They have a HUGE screened in pool area and private lot next door, you can google search it at 75 Raemoor Dr, Palm Coast, Fla 32137. We could drive up to pick the pets up. My mom and dad walks their one cat several times per day and wheels her around in a red wagon, lol, THEY LOVE THEIR CATS MORE THEN THEIR KIDS!! LOL. Anyway, please pass my email address or phone number if someone needs a temp home for their pets. We will also make a donation, Im heading over to their house to talk about the amount and the supplies we can send. My number is 386.283.5380… I wish the best for everyone including the little creatures, ; )

  42. Lisa Ostello says:

  96. Carla says:

Is there any way to donate specifically for rabbits and small mammals? These are often considered the lowest of the low and in shelters get far less attention than cats or dogs. They are the most needy.

If I send a check will it actually be used for rabbits?

    Thank you.

    • Terri says:

You can contact Oklahoma City Animal Welfare division they take in all misc animals as well as cats and dogs. They i believe have some rabbit’s and birds from the storm as well as cats and dogs. And all animals needs are met regardless if its a hamster or a dog.

Probably a stupid question, but have you (or any of the other groups) had much success with reuniting microchipped pets with their people? Or is the devastation to widespread for that to be a helpful option?

    • okhumane says:

That’s actually a wonderful question! Yes, we’ve had great success reuniting pets that are microchipped with their owners, and we can’t encourage you strongly enough to have your pet microchipped! Identification is SO important, and a microchip is the best option.

  125. Crystal says:

My company was searching for “what was needed” after the storm. So many places want money donated and have many revenues for this, but our employees wanted to purchase supplies such as a canned food drive, etc. I was having a hard time finding a charity that was in need of this and I was sent this article. My eyes immediately go toward shelters in need of help and I saw your post. Please let me know what type supplies you need… medical/first aid, food, blankets, etc. for these injured horses. I will be more than happy to organize an effort to get these supplies to you. Also, send me an address of where to send it. My heart breaks for these animals.

  129. okhumane says:

Sheila and Katy, the horses and livestock who survived the storm are being cared for and have been relocated to local facilities.
