Fireworks and Wiggy Pets

July 2nd, 2012

Fireworks and big crowds from 4th of July celebrations can get some pets pretty “wigged out.” Did you know that more dogs go missing during this time of year than any other? That’s right- Fido might be terrified of fireworks, so you’ll want to take extra care to make sure your pets are kept safe this holiday.

Connie Howard, Director of Animal Welfare Relations at Pethealth, Inc. has some great tips on how to keep your furry family members safe and stress-free during the Independence Day celebrations:

  • “When leaving pets home alone, keep doors and windows firmly closed;
  • Properly crate-trained dogs often take comfort in their “den” and should be crated (with appropriate positive reinforcement);
  • Keep pets sequestered in a quiet, low-activity room when entertaining;
  • Never trust your guests! Even the most conscientious visitors can forget themselves and leave a door or window ajar long enough to let a pet escape.”
We thought of a few more tips to help you out!
  • Make sure your pets- even the “inside only” ones- are all wearing secure collars with ID tags.
  • Do a head-count of your pets before and after the festivities so you’ll notice who’s there, and who’s not, as quickly as possible!
  • Be prepared for next year by getting your dog or cat microchipped for only $20 at OK Humane Place’s Low-Cost Vaccination & Microchip Clinic on July 19th, 2012 from 8 AM – 3 PM.
If you still end up losing a pet, don’t panic. Contact your local animal shelter to alert them and be sure to visit all shelters near you in person on a daily basis to check for your pet. Print up “Lost Pet” flyers and hang them around your home within (at least) a 2 mile radius. Create a lost pet ad on Craigslist and share your pet’s picture & information on your social media profiles.
