Designer Dog Houses to Benefit Central Oklahoma Humane Society
26th Annual Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show January 18 – 20
OKLAHOMA CITY – The newly established Central Oklahoma Humane Society will offer pets for adoption and will benefit from a silent auction and raffle at the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show held in four buildings at the Oklahoma State Fair Park January 18 – 20.
Designer doghouses including “Barkingham Palace” inspired by English royal living and designed by mural fantasy artist Lawrence Grech are available through both a silent auction and raffle with all proceeds benefiting Central Oklahoma Humane Society.
Until recently, Oklahoma City was the only city of its size without a humane society. The new Central Oklahoma Humane Society is working to enrich the communities it serves by promoting the well-being of animals. The Society believes euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals is not acceptable and that public education is the key to their humane treatment.
Show attendees can stop by the Central Oklahoma Humane Society’s booth to play with some of the animals up for adoption and fill out an application to bring one of the cuddly creatures home. The Humane Society will be on hand throughout the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show to answer questions about pet care and how to choose the right pet for your family.
“OK Humane is working tirelessly in partnership with Oklahoma City Animal Welfare to develop programs that will enable our community to achieve no kill status for healthy, adoptable dogs and cats,” said Christy Counts, president of the Central Oklahoma Humane Society. “Adoption is an important component of our overall goal. People will have the opportunity to adopt a pet that will suit their lifestyle and personality. I hope that people will walk away from the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show with a greater understanding of the Humane Society and maybe even a new puppy.”
A private, not-for-profit organization that does not receive government or national funding, the organization will rely on show attendees to bid and purchase the doghouses to raise important funds for their work.
Pet lovers will also want to stop by the DockDogs competition while at the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show. DockDogs, a canine sporting event established through ESPN's Great Outdoor Games in 1999, will feature two competitions, Dock Diving and Extreme Vertical. Dock Diving, or the long jump, will test the dog’s ability to fly through the air to reach the longest distance. The Extreme Vertical, or high jump, will challenge dogs to soar sky-high for the top height. The dogs will compete on Friday and Saturday to qualify for the finals. On Sunday, the top 24 dogs will compete to become the ultimate Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show Champion.
