Happy Tails

I adopted this kitty at Petsmart on 05/27/10. His number was #4521 and his name is now “Bo.” I just thought you might like to see how he is doing. You can tell he is a male because he took over the remote. We really love him and her gets along great with his two older “brothers”! Thanks you for a great pet!

Zoey is doing wonderful. She is growing up a storm. She and our other pup that we adopted from Great Plains Mastiff in Edmond love each other so much. Cricket is about 6 weeks older than Zoey. I have attached a couple so you can see her, too. Thanks for keeping in touch with us.
Lorida
I adopted Barkley earlier this year at the “Puppy Sale” shortly after my 8-year old Great Pyrenees mix, Samantha, passed away. While it’s been a bit of an adjustment having a puppy in the house once again, it’s also been lots of fun! Barkley is sweet, energetic and sometimes mischievous. She’s even bonded with our 14 year old lab, Millie. Her absolute favorite thing to do is get whatever ball/toy our boys are playing with in the backyard and challenge them to a game of “keep away”. She never gets tired of having little people chase her around in pursuit of their objects. Thanks so much for all you do for the animals in our community and for bringing Barkley into our lives.

Meredith (left) and Amelia came to me in mid-October, along with two other kittens, as my first foster experience with OK Humane. The four 6-week old kittens were tiny and covered in fleas. After a few baths, a warm bed, some toys, and excellent support from the OK Humane staff and volunteers, they transformed into bouncing, curious, and healthy kittens. After spending three weeks with the litter, I found myself incredibly attached to them, and ultimately decided to adopt Meredith and Amelia. My older cat has taken some time to get used to the idea of having other cats around, but now he sometimes forgets to act sophisticated and I catch him chasing after them playfully. It breaks my heart to think about the fate these kittens might have met, as they are now such an integral part of my family!

I adopted Harper (Now Bailey Harper) from you about 2 months ago and just wanted to send you a little update on her! Well, she lived in OKC with my parents for a little while until about a month ago but she’s now here in San Antonio living a college dog life! She’s 25 pounds now (she got weighed on Friday) and is already outgrowing her kennel
She loves going to watch soccer games and volleyball and finds the constant flow of people in our apartment make her happy. We visited my parents last week (she loves riding in the car!) and she developed a little territorial bark…mainly at birds and the signs in the yard. She loves playing in the sprinklers and swimming! My room mate has a fox Terrier who’s 15 pounds and they just love to play together for hours and hours on end! She eats a lot and likes to sit down while she eats…she has elevated bowls and I guess she likes to sit and eat like I do! She’s pretty much potty trained…however when she’s playing she sometimes waits a lil to long to go to the door, but it’s a bonus that she’ll only have accidents on the tile so they’re easy to clean!!! She’s an amazing puppy and I’m so happy I have her! She is always happy and willing to play and she LOVES going on walks and playing with other dogs! As my dad says, she has more personality than most dogs and that’s why we fit so well!!!!!! Thank you for allowing me to have her in my life and I’ll email you pictures later this week!!!!!!!

Good morning Ms. Caitlin, Since it’s been 2 weeks since I was at the (adoption center), I thought I would update you about my new home with Mr. and Mrs. Sherry. You remember that I’m shy, so I spent a couple of days underneath this huge couch in the family room. While there, I got to know all the noises in the house – there’s an ice maker, dishwasher, refrigerator, washer and dryer that make noises I’m not used to. I figured out the difference in the television voices and those of Mr. and Mrs. Sherry. I did start using my litter box right away, except for one minor accident – I had to pee and I couldn’t remember where the box was. Mr. and Mrs. Sherry were really nice about it, and just cleaned it up for me.
After a day or two, I enjoyed exploring the house – it’s a lot bigger space than what I had at the (adoption center), so it’s taking me a while to see everything and mark it. We’ve had some human guests, but they leave. In the last few days, I’ve discovered that life above the couch is much better – I like the soft throws they put out for me, and I’ve learned that Mr. and Mrs. Sherry like to pet me, rub my chin and play with me. I’ve started purring, because I know you humans like that – they also like to watch me knead, which is good because I like to knead all the time. Last night, I decided to get in the big bed upstairs with them – it’s really warm and soft and I took a nap. This morning, I had breakfast with Mrs. Sherry. While she was eating, I looked out of the breakfast room window that has a cool window seat for me. I can see the yard from the window seat and not be scared. I talk to the birds; I’ve also started talking to the humans, but they aren’t sure what I’m saying yet. I’ll train them soon. They are trying to train me (ha, ha) because they don’t seem to approve of me jumping up on the bar, kitchen counters, or hanging out behind the stereo equipment on shelves. I’m not sure I’m going back to the stereo equipment, because this cleaning lady visitor stuck a swiffer in my face while I was napping. She didn’t know I could fly, but I immediately flew under the couch to get away from that darned swiffer. I sometimes scratch the couch to get their attention, but they are on to me and are redirecting me to two different scratching posts (that I really kind of like, but don’t tell them..)
If it’s OK with you, I think I’d like to stay in this house. You and Ms. Hoch were so good to me at (OK Humane), and I really appreciate your taking care of me. I hope you understand that I really like having my own house to myself with two people who I can control. I’ll ask Mrs. Sherry to send you e-mails occasionally.
With my love, Briana
Duchess & Duke
My cat and dog of 12 years died within six months of each other. I had moved in with my mother to care for her as her dementia became noticeably progressive. The thought of taking on new pets and caring for her didn’t seem conducive at the time. However I had noticed my mom continuing to withdraw into herself and brought her to the humane society to give her a chance to connect with some animals. My mom has had cats all her life and even though she claims to be a cat person, I had noticed she was very responsive to dogs as well. Though I had no intention of adopting that day in January I ended up leaving with a “matching” (see photo) cat, Duchess (fka Mittens), and dog, Duke (fka Chance), after a year with no pets. They have really helped my mom come out of her shell and added some much needed life to our home. Six weeks later, Annabelle joined the family as well. All thanks to the Oklahoma Humane Society. Since then we have continued to visit other animals in area shelters. The Central Oklahoma Humane Society by far has the best facilities and nicest staff. Thank you.

Zeva
I just wanted to send you some pics of Zeva. She’s doing great. I was really worried about her introduction to our adult male cat, Rumble, but we took it extra nice and slow and they LOVE each other. They sleep together, eat together, wrestle all the time, it was a dream come true. She gets along great with our dogs; sometimes when she claims one of the dog beds for a nap, our two dogs will double up in one bed rather than disturb her, she might rule the roost someday!

Pearl
“I have copied some pictures below of Pearl’s new life. There she is, sitting in our family room waiting to be introduced to Braden on Christmas morning! Her dog bed is beside her and you can see we got her a new sweater, collar, etc. (they have even gotten her a new coat since then!).
Next, you can see Pearl and Braden’s first meeting. She automatically licked him in the face. When we first got her and were holding her to keep her a secret from Braden, she didn’t like us in her face for kisses or anything. Pearl eventually warmed up, but she kissed Braden on their first meeting. Pearl has done very well in her new home. At first, she was not eating very much, but she finally found a food she likes and has been increasing on the amounts she consumes. She sleeps with Braden in his bed every night, and if he is gone, she sleeps in her bed in my parents’ bedroom. They have all gotten accustomed to each other and she has certainly made herself a home there. She loves to snuggle in Braden’s and my parents laps whenever they are seated and we have found her temperament to just be wonderful.”

Sampson
“It has been one year since we adopted “Sampson,” pictured at left (lineage indeterminate). Though we were leery of owning a male dog, especially a large one, he is the sweetest dog we’ve ever owned – and we’ve had some good ones. When we took him to our vet for his initial check up, we described how he did a “bunny hop” with his back legs when he ran fast. It turned out that his left hip had been dislocated at some point in his past and never treated. We consulted with a surgeon who told us it could not be re-inserted but that he was a candidate for a procedure called a femoral head ostectomy. That, he explained, would relieve him from the joint pain that he likely already felt and that would get worse with age. He had the procedure in early October. He had a rough couple of weeks immediately following the procedure but is now as mobile as he was before the procedure and the new pseudo-joint is still strengthening. The doctor tells us that now Sampson will not experience the chronic pain that he would have had to live with the rest of his life without the surgery. He’s a great dog who has fit into our household better than we could ever have imagined. We are grateful to the Humane Society for the work they do that brought Sampson into our lives.”

Rufus
“I adopted Rufus in May of 2008, two weeks after my fiancée and I rescued Miley from a golden retriever rescue in OKC. They have been inseparable ever since then. Rufus started out very small but we always new that with his large paws he would grow to be taller. I didn’t know that he would be as tall as our golden! Now they are about even in dog tug of war. Rufus is excellent at retrieving golf balls that i drive in the course behind my house. When I first got Rufus his leg was hurt and he could not run very fast. He has totally healed and is now a lot faster than Miley. They both enjoy the visits to Tulsa’s Bark Park where surprisingly Rufus has an identical twin sister. I still can’t believe that someone would want to give him away and feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful dog! He is a little timid around rivers and lakes due to his fear of the fish in the arkansas but after some coaxing we get him to swim out in the river and the narrows in the wildlife refuge. His favorite thing is to bark at the buffalo. Lately, Rufus and Miley have been advocate dogs for the Alzheimer’s association, Tulsa Cares, and Chron’s and Colitis foundation. We take our dogs everywhere and they enjoy the company of all the people we meet and even our cat Angel! Thanks again for a great experience!”

Maggie Alice
“Our cat, Maggie Alice (yes, my son named her!), is wonderful. She is, hand’s down, one of the easiest animals we have ever had. We have 3 kids, and she loves to be in whatever room they are in. She is quiet but likes to be in whatever room our family is in. We have dogs, but she whipped them into shape in no time, and they completely ignore her. She tries to sit somewhere and whack their faces to get them to play with her, but they just squint their eyes and take it! She is an indoor cat. She sharpens her claws on the carpet and not on the furniture. We feel like she is a great addition to our family, and we couldn’t be happier!”

Baby
“I really appreciate all you and the Humane Society do! We love our new “baby” and look forward to watching her grow up with our kids! Thanks again!”

Juno
“Juno (previously Betsy) is doing very well. She is such a sweet dog and even when she chews on shoes or whines during the night, she still finds a way to make up for it. We are very happy that we have Juno as a part of our family. She loves our cats and especially our guinea pig!”

Toby
“Our cat’s name is now Toby and he is doing absolutely wonderful. He just got his 2nd kitten shot and is currently being treated for ear mites but other than that he is a wonderful, healthy little guy. He is such a sweet little kitten and has three playmates to keep him entertained (I have 2 other cats and a dog). My 15 lb. cat “Lily” absolutely loves him and they just run, play and wrestle. He’s picked his favorite cat tree in the house… I have 4 to choose from and loves sleeping and climbing. He has now met my easy-going, laid-back dog “Crystal” who could care less about cats. It was very obvious that he hadn’t seen a big dog and tried to get as big as he could get the first time he saw her. I laughed so hard and now he just plays with her tail and hops around her like he’s going to attack, then he tears off like he scared himself. He’s been such a joy and I’m sure glad he is now a part of my family.”

Katie Scarlet & Mindy
“Katie Scarlet and Mindy are great. They are enjoying our family and we are enjoying them. Katie had an ear infection and Mindy got upper respitory infection but both are feeling better. They are so sweet and our kids love them so much. I attached a photo of our youngest daughter Presleigh and Katie and Mindy. She is pretty much their favorite I think because she is on their level. But I’m their second fav.”

Bawler
“We adopted a 7-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound in June. His name is Bawler (you’d understand why if you heard him bark.
). He was a tracking dog for a prison here in the state, which means he would search for prisoners if they escaped. When we got him, he was almost completely blind, not house trained, and completely STUBBORN.
When we first got him, he would run into walls, trees, furniture, fall off of curbs, etc. My husband and I took him to our vet in South OKC and we’ve regained about 90% of his vision back using steroid and antibiotic creams and eye drops. He’s almost houset rained now (what a battle that has been) and the stubbornness we’ve got pretty much under control, thanks to some friends and family at K9 University. Bawler has been such a blessing in our lives. We really could not ask for a better dog, except maybe our Mini Aussie, Chloe!
I would highly recommend adopting a senior pet! They are so appreciative of what you have done for them!”

Chloe Jay
“We wanted to share some pictures of our sweet Chloe Jay—she is so full of energy and a blast to have in our family! I’m proud to say with the help of our schnauzer she is already potty trained and growing like a weed. Her favorite thing is to run around and play with her brother and sister. We love her so much!!”
